The Relationship between Inflation and Economic Growth in Sudan (1970- 2013)
(University of Khartoum, ) Daffalla, Elgunid Mohammed Abdalla ; Abuel Gasim Mohamed Abuel Nour ; Department of Economics
This study aims at investigating the nature of the relationship between inflation and economic growth in the short and long run in Sudan for the period 1970 -2013. The importance of the study stems from the on-going debate on the nature of inflation and economic growth relationship. One of the most important objectives of macroeconomic policies in Sudan is to sustain high economic growth rate together with low rate of inflation. The research employs the unit root to test the stability of the time series data period and the co- integration model ‘’Johnson test’’ .Besides, it uses the vector error correction ‘’VEC’’ to get acquaintance with the nature of the relationship between the two variables in the short and long run .The data were collected from secondary sources. Based on the econometric analysis, the findings revealed that there is an inverse relationship between inflation and economic growth in the short run and there is no effective relationship between the two variables in the long run .Therefore, the study recommends that economic policy makers should be concerned in short run to the stability of macroeconomic variables that would leads to economic stability. Moreover, it recommends the necessity of laying down monetary and financial policies that lead to the reduction of the money supply which in turn will lead to the reduction of the rate of inflation. In the long run policy makers should take into consideration other economic variables, such as population growth rate and productivity, so as to achieve sustainable growth rates

The thesis Title: The Role of the United Nations in Protecting the Human Rights in the Sudan (1990-2013). Researcher: Sahar Hamza Hassan Osman. Degree: Msc. in International Relations. The issue of respecting Human Rights had been of an extreme importance all over the world, where it settled in the Customary International Law a long time ago. The statement of the problem stem from the fact that the human rights has a local national nature not an international one, and there are various variables that contributed to convey it’s observation mechanisms to be under the international organizations jurisdiction. The aims of this thesis were to recognize the role that has been played by the UN and its organs , in terms of protecting human rights in the Sudan, as well as the impacts of the economic and trade sanctions which imposed on Sudan because of the allegations of human rights violations. The thesis had adopted the descriptive method to determine the United Nations working mechanisms, the analytical, case study and the deductive methods to verify the conventions that ratified by the Sudan. The thesis explores two hyposis, the first one, the existence of the laws and it’s mechanisms does not necessarily means the protection of Human rights in the Sudan, secondly, Sudan noncompliance with the conventions that were not ratified by it’s legislative power, did not leads the UN and it’s competent organs to interfere in the Sudan internal affairs. The most significant findings are, the national legislatives is made in the ministry of Justice, given that this body is a dependent governmental one. It’s oblivious that the international community and the UN deals with the issue of human rights in different approaches according to the weight of the state, though the importance of the issue of human rights is determined by the victims religious, ethnicity affiliation and the nature of their regime. The penalties, the economic and commercial sanctions imposed on the Sudan, did not resulted in positive ends in terms of the state compliance to this pressures. The most prominent recommendations are: the mechanism of the international humanitarian law and the law of human rights, shall be revised and promoted in particular the responsibilities of the armed militias and the individuals who committed crimes against humanity, to activate the role of NGO’s, GO’s in terms of promoting the concepts and mechanisms of human rights, working together with UN to create a permanent mechanism for peace keeping in the conflicts zones, to support and maintain peace, security and stability in the Sudan.
