Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the use of air conditioning evaporator coils to extract distilled water from the humid atmosphere prevailing in Port Sudan city for car batteries application. The evaporator coils may be considered as a source of certain amounts of distilled water at a free cost since the distilled water is a by-product of the climate conditioning process. The performance of the evaporator coil in the air handling unit -12 has been investigated for one day in March 2010 in Coral Hotel, Port Sudan by employing measured climatic conditions for that day. During the period 8AM to 5 PM, the water yield is minimal due to the high air temperature and low relative humidity. Although the water yield is low during mid-day hours, it is high for low air temperature and high humidity ratio, typical nighttime's climatic conditions in coastal regions. The total condensate water per day was 155 litters. A sample of condensed water has been taken from air conditioning drainage from Port Sudan city and subjected to the following tests: 1- PH 2- T.D.S 3- Hardness The findings of the analysis were reasonably good, and the quality of this water was found to be similar to the commercial distilled water sold in Port Sudan market. Also the research proposes a typical design for collection and filtration system, to collect condensate water that is formed on air handling units of cooling system. The financial evaluation shows this project can reserve about 24538 SDG per month and the period required to cover the cost of an investment is 48.6 days.
