Title: Self-Esteem in English Language Achievement

Abstract: Previous research has concentrated on aptitude and intelligence as the most important effective factors in foreign language learning. However, not much research has been conducted on the effects of affective factors and hardly on the effects of self-esteem on foreign language achievement. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and achievement in English as a foreign language. The sample of this study consists of 127 students studying English at the Faculty of Arts, University of Khartoum. 47 were 4th and 80 were 3rd grade students. Chapter one is an introductory chapter where a general idea about the area of the study is presented. Also, the chapter discusses the problem, questions, objectives, hypotheses and the significance of the study. In addition, it consists of the perception of the study. Chapter two is a theoretical framework of the study. It discusses the theoretical studies that had been written to show the effects of self-esteem on achievement. Also, the chapter discusses the relation of self-esteem to other variables such as motivation, sex and gifted children.Chapter three is a review of the literature . Previous empirical studies that had been conducted about the relationship between self-esteem and achievement in foreign languages , on one hand, and its relation to sex, intelligence and motivation on the other hand are also discussed. Furthermore, the effects of selfesteem on Gifted Children as far as their achievement is concerned are also tackled. Chapter four shows the methodology of the study where the questionnairewhich consists of a self-esteem scale - is used as the instrument of the study. Chapter five is a report of an empirical study. The questionnaire - which consists of self-esteem scale - was the instrument used for data collection. Different statistical tests such as means scores, standard deviations, correlation coefficients and t- test were used in the analysis of the data. The main findings of this study were :- 1. There is a relationship between level of self-esteem and achievement in English as a foreign language. The higher the self-esteem is, the higher is the achievement, and the lower the self-esteem is, the lower is the achievement. 2. There is no statistically significant differences between males and females in the level of self-esteem towards English language learningChapter six -which is a concluding chapter - consists of a summary, conclusions, implications, recommendations and directions for further research.
