Title: A case Study of Possible Causes of Insecticides Misuse in Fruit and Vegetable Production in Khartoum State
Author: Ahmed, Ihsan Elamien
Abstract: In this study, assessment of possible reasons for misuse of insecticides was investigated. Two areas in the Northern rural districts of Khartoum State were chosen as the largest areas growing fruits and vegetables. Twenty farmers from each area were randomly taken and put to a questionnaire. The continuous infestation of fruits and vegetables by pests, created serious problems which require regular control. Farmers rely, only, on chemical control methods for crop protection. In addition to that, lack of the appropriate cultural practices and farmers’ poor knowledge about environmental hazard of insecticides usage has aggravated the situation. The result showed that the precautions in insecticides applications, like: The recommended dose, spraying of insecticides during day time, protective clothes are all ignored. The proper storage and the recommended way of disposal of empty insecticides containers were poorly followed. Agricultural services to conduct ideal information for using insecticides and availability of equipments to meet farmers’ needs were inadequate. The study, also, recommends the establishment of a strong link or relationship between the researchers, the extensionists and the farmers, as the essentials, to coordinate efforts for sound crop protection, and hopefully with the least hazards of pesticides misuse.
