Author: Nurain, Salih Ahmed
Abstract: The field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted during the course of this study at Shambat area and at Entomology laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum. The study was aimed to investigate the Biology and the Morphology of the butterfly Junonia orithya (L.). The laboratory investigation on the biology revealed that the total development duration of the species was 25.4 ± 3days. The pre-oviposition period was 3.5 ± 0.8 days and the incubation period was 3.5 ± 1days. The mean oviposition period was 6 ± 1 days. The species has five larval instars, these instars took durations of 2.3 ± 0.5, 2.3 ± 0.5, 2.3 ± 0.4, 2.7 ± 0.4 and 2.8 ± 0.4 days respectivelyand the larval stage lasted 12.4± 0.8days in development. The pupal stage took in average 6 ± 1.2 days. The morphological results showed that the eggs are barrel-like and tends to globular with dark green colour. The larva colour is reddish-brown to grey to black to brown-leady at late stage. The pupa is creamy-brown in colour. The laboratory study indicated that the species has high preference to Striga hermonthica. The results showed, the efficiency and abilityof the late larval stages in damaging. Predators and parasites were observed checking the insect in the field.
