Title: Effect Of Seed Source, Plant In Row Spacing, And Seed Tuber Size On Growth And Yield Of Potato (Solanum Tuberosum) Under Khartoum State Conditions
Author: Mohamed, Mohamed Ahmed El Bashir
Abstract: It is a common practice that potato growers in the central Sudan save part of their previous year’s potato crop to be used as seed for the next year crop. They are competabled to do so mainly for reasons of late arrival of seed potatoes, asculating prices of certified seeds. It is also a universal practice, among these growers to cut the tuber into several pieces before planting mainly for economic reasons. These experiments were carried out under the arid conditions of the Sudan. Objective of this study: To evaluate the performance of the locally multiplied seed potatoes with the certified seed potatoes imported from the Netherlands. To investigate the effect of three different seed tuber sizes (i.e large intact seed, small intact seed and cut pieces) on growth and yield of potato. To investigate the effect of two different spacings, closer spacing (20 cm) and wider spacing (30 cm) on growth and yield of potatoes. Emergence, growth parameters and final tuber yield were determined at their appropriate times. The study showed that the use of locally multiplied seed potatoes leads to high degeneration rate. Also, the use of intact seed gave better results compared to cut pieces universally used by potato growers in the central Sudan. The study also showed that the 20 cm in-row spacing was better than 30 cm spacing in terms of final tuber yield per unit area of land.
