Title: Effect of Rising Groundwater on Engineering Structures at Some areas in Omdurman Town
Author: El-mubarak, Nada Abdel-rahmanKhogali
Abstract: Engineering structures in Omdurman area have been affected by groundwater rising phenomenon. Damage to some engineering structures in Beit Almal, Albustah , Al-Ardah, Banat and Almouradah have been noticed such as Alzaeem Al-Azhari and Al-Ardah streets. It has been reported that there are significant almost horizontal bands of mudstone interacted with the sandstone of the Nubian Formation. Some of these impervious bands situated close to the ground surface and prevent water from natural or artificial sources to infiltrate into deeper aquifer, thus creating temporary perched aquifer. From this aquifer water is expected accumulate rise up. The objective of the research is to establish the soil profiles to be acquainted with the geotechnical properties of different layers. Six boreholes were drilled I selected areas in Omdurman town and series of field and laboratory tests were made to identify the geotechnical properties. Piezometers have been installed to observe the variation of water levels for five months and samples of water were taken to measure the constituents of the groundwater. Chemical analysis for the groundwater including sulphate content, chloride content, pH value and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) value were measured to identify the existent of contamination in the groundwater and its effect on concrete. Also permeability test were made to determine the permittivity of the soil to surface water infiltration. It has been found that the soil formation consists of different layers ranging between cohessionless material to plastic clay in some layers. Groundwater in some areas has been contaminated and can affect the engineering structures.
