dc.description.abstract The Northern State of the Sudan lies completely in the desert and semi- desert arid zone with less than 100mm annual rainfall. Artificial irrigation is the only means to support agricultural production using diesel engines. This study aims to calculate the cost of pumping irrigation water using diesel and to investigate the effect of using electricity as an alternative source of energy on the cost of pumping irrigation water both from the Nile and underground water. A stratified sample of 120 pumps was selected from the universe containing three strata according to the pump size, small, medium and large size irrigation pumps and the operators of the pumps were interviewed for the costs of pumping irrigation water. The cost per cubic metre was calculated using diesel as a source of energy and compared to the cost of pumping one cubic metre of irrigation water using electric energy. It was found that cost varies negatively with the pump sizes and discharge rates with diesel revealing obvious economies of scale with respect to size. The mean cost per cubic metre for small size pumps using diesel was 3.31 Sudanese Dinars (SD) on the Nile and SD 3.75 from underground water. Mean costs were SD 2.65 and SD 1.57 for the medium and large size pumps respectively. Using electric energy was found to lower cost of pumping irrigation water by 58% for the pumping elevation of 10 metres, the most predominant in the State and by 52% for an elevation of 12 metres. This study recommends that electric energy should be introduced for pumping irrigation water in the Northern State to lower cost of pumping taking into consideration the break-even prices of the unit of electricity supplied at the farm level. Collection of the small fragmented holdings is crucial to lower cost of pumping with diesel used as a source of energy and allows the effective use of modern agricultural technologies in the production process en_US
