Title: Some Economic Impacts of Globalization on Sudan Economy During 1992-2001

Abstract: Basic objective of this research is to discuss the economic impacts of globalization on Sudan economy during the period 1992-2001, through applying theoretical and practical elaborations based on statistics and reliable information maintained from the departments of concern. It focused mainly on the positive and negative impacts of globalization on Sudan economy during the period under study as well as implications of the phenomenon on the Sudanese economic life and welfare. The research had discussed the impacts of globalization on Sudan economy and it provided some basic information on the concept of globalization and main aspects of Sudan economy during the period under study to evaluate and analysize the said impacts manifested by globalization process on Sudan economy, to verify the hypothesis and to answer the research problem. Through consistent discussion and analytical evaluation the research had considered the said impacts of globalization on Sudan economy to maintain reliable findings and recommendations. Consequently it had been organized into five main chapters including introduction, basic concepts on globalization, main aspects of Sudan economy during 1992-2001, evaluation of some economic impacts of globalization on Sudan economy during 1992-2001 and summary, conclusions and recommendations. The research had selected the period 1992-2001 because it witnessed remarkable development towards integration in global economic system through implementation of structural adjustment programs and promotion of regional and global economic cooperation. General introductory background was placed in the first chapter to provide historical perspective on emergence and development of contemporary globalization process with special focus on economic globalization as a driving force for the whole process of globalization. Furthermore, regional economic cooperation was outlined to acquaint interested parties with the performance of Sudan economy at regional and global levels. Problem of research was obviously stated in this chapter to describe the position of insufficient information and data on economic impacts of globalization on Sudan economy during the period under study, consequently it was designed to maintain a reliable solution on said problem. Furthermore, the prime objective of this research was to evaluate the economic impacts of globalization process on Sudan economy through consideration of wide range of variables related to subject matter. Hypothesis of research was also specified in the first chapter to state that more positive and less negative economic impacts will be reflected on Sudan economy due to connection with global economic system through process of globalization during the period of study. Methodology of descriptive analytical approach was applied throughout the research to verify the hypothesis of research and to maintain a reliable solution for research problem. Although globalization is multidimensional phenomenon encompassing many dimensions such as economic, social, political, cultural, geographical and so forth, but the scope of research is exactly determined in the first chapter to state that research will basically consider the economic dimension of globalization as a driving fore for the whole process of globalization and its impacts on Sudan economy are evidently proved during the specified period of concern. In addition to that secondary data and information are collected from reliable sources such as academic libraries, research centers, government economic institutions and so forth to enrich the process of evaluation and analysis throughout the research. Also, the research is organized into five basic chapters to encompass most of conceptual and operational dimensions of subject matter. As such this chapter had provided a comprehensive introduction to the whole research. The second chapter of this research focused on the conceptual framework of the phenomenon of globalization which defined by many scholars and intellectuals around the globe, some of them are in favor of the phenomenon, others are against it meanwhile the third group of said scholars emphasized the fact that globalization has some positive impacts should be maximized and some negative impacts should be minimized. Also comparative conceptualization of globalization versus internationalization was tackled in this chapter to clarify the differences between the two dogmas. Some economic institutions of globalization exemplified by world trade organization (WTO), international monetary fund (IMF), international bank for reconstruction and development (IBRD) and so forth had been considered in this chapter to acquaint the concerned parties with basic global activities introduced by said institutions. Internet services and technological advancement are considered through focusing on e-commerce, e-management, e-government as an integral part of global information revolution. Furthermore, the major developments in global economy during the period under study had been tackled to enrich conceptualization of the phenomenon and to provide empirical examples for the performance of global economy. The research had continued elaborations on performance of Sudan economy in chapter three in order to provide wide range of supporting data on the subject matter of the research. Consequently geographical background on Sudan economy has been considered to furnish reliable background that enhances subsequent analysis and evaluation. Basic features of Sudan economy before 1992 also under focused by the research to facilitate comparison with the period after 1992. Statistical tables for performance of Sudan economy are prepared throughout the chapter to include restructuring of population and labor force due to migration, education and health, to cover the performance of basic components of gross domestic product, agriculture, industry and services. Also statistics and information on major developments in monetary policies during the period under concern are focused by the chapter. furthermore, balance of payments as major indicator for the position of national economy is considered to reflect economic position with outside world. External obligation of the country also gathered and statistical examined to show the growth of national debts due to payment to foreign creditors. Statistical table and some information on performance of foreign direct investment during the same period are tackled to explain the contribution of FDI to ongoing national economic development in the Sudan. In addition to that some national developments of global origin had been considered for example the practical procedures to join world trade organization, establishment of Sudanese standards and metrology organization enhancement of cross borders trade and regional economic grouping exemplified by common market for eastern and southern Africa and the Arabian free trade area. Consequently the research had basically tackled the main aspects of Sudan economy to provide wide range of statistics and information that enhance the maintained answers for the problem and elaborated results for research hypothesis. Based on conceptualization of globalization process and elaboration of basic components of Sudan economy during the period under study, the research had critically discussed and analyzed the hypothesis of research in chapter four through focusing on positive and negative economic impacts of globalization on Sudan economy. The evaluation of economic impacts had covered most of impacts manifested by economic liberalization on re-structure of population, health, education and migration. Positive and negative impacts on performance of cost of living, inflation rate and unemployment rate were tackled to evaluate the said manifestations of structural adjustment programs as an integral part of global agenda. Impacts reflected on performance of gross domestic product which consisted of agriculture, industry and services had been considered to verify the hypothesis of research that more positive and less negative economic impacts had been reflected on Sudan economy during the said period as a result of connection with global economic system. Of course, banks and other financial institutions had been affected significantly by the development of globalization process, through re-structuring of financial and monetary policies, automation of banking services, qualification of labor forces and so forth, which critically evaluated to prove the hypothesis of research. The evaluation of economic impacts extended to include performance of balance of payments in order to evaluate the economic relation between Sudan and outside world during the period under focus. The contribution of foreign direct investments which played a central role on contemporary development of the Sudan had been tackled in details to show the positive and negative economic impacts manifested on Sudan economy due to economic liberalization. Consequently chapter four had been divided into two major categories including positive economic impacts in the first category and the negative impacts in the second category in order to facilitate the process of evaluation and analysis. The research had been summarized and concluded in chapter five as final destination for the whole process of data collection and evaluation. Furthermore, the reliable recommendations based on previous elaborations and analysis were tackled in the same chapter to enhance future relation between Sudan economy and globalization process. Reliable findings on research problem and verified hypothesis are considered as an integral part of the final chapter which contained wide range of recommendations and findings. To maximize positive economic impacts and to minimize negative economic impacts manifested by globalization process on Sudan economy the final chapter of this research had introduced a considerable recommendations on future population structure, labor force, gross domestic product, government finance, banks and financial institutions, balance of payments, foreign direct investments and regional economic grouping. Also mechanism how to globalize Sudan economy in the future is proposed in the final chapter to acquaint researchers and policy-makers with needed information. Although the research has tackled wide range of economic impacts of globalization on Sudan economy during the period under concern, but globalization will remain multidimensional and illusive process that involves further study and evaluation by researchers and other parties of concern to enrich data accessibility and to support the process of decision making around the country
