Title: Studies on Parasites of some Commercial Fresh Water Fishes at Alkalakla Alqubba -South of Khartoum
Author: Nejlaa Elhaj Hassan, Taha
Abstract: An extensive parasitological survey was carried out on 161 freshwater fishes collected from the White Nile in an area South of Khartoum (Alkalakla Alqubba). The studied host species were Bagrus bayad ( bayad )*, Bagrus docmac ( kabaroce ), Barbus bynni ( binny ), Distichodus niloticus ( kharish ), Hydrocyon forskalii ( kass ), Lates niloticus, ( igl ), Oreochromis niloticus ( bulti ), Schilbe mystus ( shilba ) and Synodontis schall ( gargur ) . The work consisted of: (1) Morphological descriptions of the endoparasites and ectoparasites encountered (2) Measurements: of prevalence and intensity of parasitic infections. (3) Comparison of prevalence rates in the studied host species. An overall prevalence rate of 18.6% of infestation by ectoparasites was recorded. Ectoparasites recovered were: (1) Lamproglena mondi, (Capart, 1944). (2) Lamproglena sp. (von Nordmann, 1832). (3) Ergasilus sp. (von Nordmann, 1832). Impression smears of liver and spleen revealed the prescence of two protozoan species in 1.9% of studied fishes, these were: (1) Myxobolus sp. (Bütschli, 1882). (2) Myxosoma heterospora, (Baker, 1963). Investigations of body cavity and viscera revealed that 72% of fishes dissected were infected with one or more of these parasites: TREMATODES: (1) Metacercaria of Clinostomum tilapiae (Ukoli, 1966). (2) Metacercaria of Clinostomum phalacrocoracis (Dubois, 1931). (3) Phyllodistomum sp. (Braum, 1899). CESTODES: (1) Wenyonia virilis, (Woodland, 1923). (2) Cyclophyllidean larva. * Sudanese local name. NEMATODES: (1) Procamallanus laeviconchus, (Wedl, 1862). (2) Spirocamallanus spiralis, (Baylis, 1923). (3) Cucullanus sp., (Mueller, 1777). (4) Spironoura sudanensis (Khalil, 1962) (5) Rhabdochona sp. (Railliet, 1916) (6) Larva of Contracaecum sp. (Railliet & Henry, 1915) (7) Larva of Amplicaecum sp. (Baylis, 1920) (8) Larva of Procamallanus laeviconchus (Wedl, 1862
