Abstract: This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of using the mass media (Radio, Television and Extension Publications), for up-grading the Knowledge of farmers to enable them to cope with the new scientific developments and to encourage them to adopt and apply the technical packages to realize the agricultural development through increased production. The weakness of the working resources and facilities of the agricultural extension services in Sudan, in general and in Kassala state in particular, are very weak. The mass media , if used effectively , well enable many farmers to get information at one time , and will also save time and effort and reduce the cost of extending the information. The researcher used the questionnaire and the content analysis method supplemented by detailed discussions with the agricultural extension agents and the local leaders to collect primary information. The secondary data was extracted form the reviewed literature. The collected data was organized; analyzed and arranged in tables of frequencies and percentages which were discussed and interpreted from which the following results are drawn: The content of the agricultural information program which are transmitted to educate the farmers, communicate alternative methods of modern farming , are offered at a frequency rate of 72% in the Radio and 75% in television. The transmitted programs discussing solutions to the operational problems facing the farmers represent only 6% in both the radio and television. Some sessions were recorded and transmitted directly from the farms (22% in radio and 58% in television). Mass media in the farmer’s perceptions are ranked as number one among the sources of agricultural information. The agricultural extension agent came second, and the neighbors and friends came in the third place. Ninety two percent of the farmers prefer listening to the radio programs regularly, Sixty percent of them prefer to watch agricultural programs on television, and Fifty five percent rely on the extension publications. The Mass Media language was described by the farmers as very clear and easy to understand. As a result the farmers described their benefits from the transmitted agricultural programs, as very high. Farmers prefer and positively accept the information transmitted on insecticides, diseases, certified seeds and irrigation. They are less attracted to the information about fertilizers and the methods of harvest. Several recommendations are made based on the results of the study, the most important of which is to design and package the relevant information and technologies to be transmitted to the farmers / producers in the right time, through the mass-media. This will, definitely, need a strong financial and material support from the concerned authorities, to strengthen the facilities and up-grade the knowledge and skills of the communication specialist and supporting extension field staff to qualify them to cope with the complex modern communication technologies.
