Abstract: This study aimed to assess effectiveness of following psychotherapy Program: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Religious and Supportive Therapy in reducing anxiety and depression levels of cardiac patients. Study also aimed to investigate degree of effectiveness of psychotherapy Program in reducing anxiety and depression levels in relation to: type of medical treatment received, sex, educational level, history of illness and marital status. Study population was all cardiac patients who were hospitalized in Sudan National Cardiac Hospital in Khartoum in year 2009. Researcher randomly assigned (46) patients into two groups: Treatment Group of (26) patients (14 males, 12 females). Control Group of (20) patients (11 males, 9 females) Tests were administered to determine anxiety and depression levels of the two groups, before and after treatment. Scales were used :State–Trait Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory. Treatment Package For Treatment Group consisted of: Relaxation Skills, Systematic Desensitization, Cognitive Restructuring Technique, Religious and Supportive Therapy. Psychotherapy was individually administered to all members of Treatment Group, which lasted for ten weeks. Total number of sessions was (256). Each individual was given ten sessions for a period of three weeks. Each session lasted between (30 – 45) minutes. Study results were as follows: There were differences between treatment and control group in post-tests on anxiety level in favour of treatment group. There were differences between treatment and control group in post-tests on depression level in favour of treatment group. There were correlation of effectiveness of treatment program–in favour of surgical patients. There was correlation of effectiveness of treatment program in favour of females. There was no correlation of effectiveness of treatment program and: age, educational level, history of illness, and marital status. Researcher concluded that certain psychotherapy interventions were effective in reducing anxiety and depression levels for cardiac patients
