Title: Fumigant Action of Egyptian garlic oil against two stored legumes pests; Bruchidius incarnatus and Callosobruchus maculatus, (Coleoptera : Bruchidae)
Author: Taha, Mohammed Abdallah Hassan
Abstract: Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions to investigate the efficacy of fumigant action of commercially available Egyptian garlic oil in small plastic cups (200g.Capacity). Test insects were Bruchids; B. incarnatus (Boh.)(adult), and C. maculates (F.) (adult). Fumigation was carried out for short period (6, 12 and 24 hours exposure period). Results of experiments indicated that Egyptian garlic oil was found effective and caused significant death (after waiting recoveries for four days compared to the control) to the tested insects at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10 and 20 % . Effects were dose related. Results indicated that both of the stored legumes pests B. incarnatus and C. maculatus (adults) were highly sensitive to garlic oil vapors and reached 100% mortality within 24 hours exposure period, therefore, no tests was carried after 24 hours exposure. The respective Lethal–Dosage obtained at various exposure periods (6, 12 and 24 hours ) were as follows: Tested insects (adult) Exposure period (hours) LD50 LD90 C. maculatus 6 hrs 13.0303 21877.6 12 hrs 1.6298 54.1 24 hrs 0. 1145 4.3726 B. incarnatus 6 hrs 28.150 13287.98 12 hrs 0.321 6.761 24 hrs 0.3137 4.1752 B. incarnatus ( adult ) was found relatively more sensitive to garlic oil vapors than C. maculatus(adult). The easiness of fumigation procedure, the commercial availability of garlic oil and expected low mammalian toxicity call for further studies on the efficacy of this oil against stored legume pests. Future lines of research were outlined.
