dc.description.abstract ABSTRAC: The present study describes a survey conducted in the area of Khartoum south in attempts to establish baseline data of exposure due to presence of telecommunication towers (antennas) in the area. A total of 50 antennas were selected and measured in the area where assessment of radiation emitted from base station is done using advanced equipment. The base-stations were chosen to represent different transmitters from different telecommunication companies available. As per antenna higher exposures (10 mW/cm2) were recor ded at places closed to the antenna and that decrease (power function) with distance. The results of the general survey showed some variation in the exposure levels with values ranging from 1.037 mW/cm2 to 15690 mW/cm2 with mean value of 578.5 1 mW/cm2. In comparison with the limits recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), these values are generally acceptable. However, recommendations to lower exposure for people living nearby the antennas are suggested here. These include setting minimum distance of 30-40 m from the nearest house and > 50 m for storey buildings. en_US
