Abstract: Abstract The study aimed to investigate the effect of external electric field on the growth and development of two cultivars of Vicia faba L. plant. This effect is expressed in terms of electric energy density created within pairs of copper plates forming electric capacitors in a DC current circuit connected to an electric source. Electric energy density differs either with the capacity of each capacitor when they are connected in parallel, or with the voltage when connected in series. The two systems were designed and used for experimentation. Seeds of V. faba were located within spaces between each capacitor’s plates and are exerted upon by different energy densities. The results showed that the effect of the electric field on V. faba cv. Agabat was greater than that of cultivar BB7 white. When using the voltage 27v and 51v to cv. BB7 white, the electric energy density was more effective in enhancing radicle length with smaller areas of the capacitor’s plates than those of larger areas plates. Also, when employing a fixed voltage to each of two pairs of capacitor’s plates with areas 225 cm2 and 100 cm2, the increase of stem height was greater when plates with larger areas were used. Generally, when varying values of voltages were employed, stem height increased with the increased voltage (range from 5.9v up to 33.5v). Voltages from 39.5v to 81.5v resulted in a greater decrease in stem height. With growth reduction growth abnormalities were recorded in the leaves and stems. Anatomical changes were recorded including increased cell size, xylem formation was also affected, and large nuclei were formed in treated plants. Biochemical analysis showed that the crude fibre content was greatly reduced when compared with control plants.
