Title: A Computer Simulation Model For The Design And Evaluation Of Border Irrigation System
Author: Elobeid Jah Elnabi Hamid, Abd Elrahim
Abstract: A computer simulation model was built and developed for the design and evaluation of border irrigation system. The model was built up using Visual Basic. 6.0 Computer Programming Language in which input data were fed through the file system, and the output data were obtained easily on the screen or as print-out. Field trails were carried out at the University of Khartoum, Top Farm to collect some of the data necessary for the development of the model. The field trials were also used to verify the model. The weather data were obtained from Shambat Meteorological Station. Crop water requirement was estimated from US Class-A evaporation pan readings. The programme is composed of an introduction interface and main menu form. The programme, when supplied with the required data, gives the crop water requirement. The programme also reads the amount of water to be applied, opportunity time, lag time, stream size, border length and irrigation efficiencies. The model was verified from field data collected during July and August 2009 as average values from three irrigations. Results obtained by the model concerning the irrigation system were: crop water requirement (6.3 mm/day), depth of water to be applied per irrigation (209 mm), opportunity time (288 min), lag time (0 min), stream size (1.6 ℓ/sec/m), border length (80 m). While results obtained by the model regarding system performance were application efficiency (78.9%), storage efficiency (80%), distribution efficiency (95%) and irrigation efficiency (65%). These results were closed to the actual results obtained from the field trials.
