Title: Effect Of Watering Interval And Nitrogen Application On Growth And Yield Of Fodder Sorghum

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted, during 2007 season in the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Shambats, to study the effect of watering interval and nitrogen application on growth and yield of fodder sorghum [orghum bicolor (L.)Moench), variety Abu Sabein. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replicates. The watering intervals used were 7, 14, and 21 days and nitrogen treatments consisted of 0N (control), 1N (40 kg N/ha) and 2N (80 kg N/ha).The watering interval treatments was applied one month after sowing and nitrogen treatments were applied two weeks after sowing. Data were collected on the following characters: growth attributes (plant height, number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, leaf area index, and leaf to stem ratio), phonological attribute (number of days to 50% flowering) and yield attributes (fresh and dry weight per plant and fresh and dry fodder yields/ha) and chemical composition (protein content and sugar content). The results showed that watering interval had no significant effect on all attributes measured in this study except plant height, leaf to stem ratio, leaf area index, and number of days to 50% flowering. On the other hand, nitrogen fertilizer had significant effect on all attributes except number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, leaf to stem ratio and number of days to 50% flowering. The interaction between watering interval and nitrogen fertilizer was not significant for most of the attributes and the highest yield (17.5 ton/ha) was obtained with 7 days irrigation interval and 40 kg N/ha treatment
