Title: Effect of Chicken Manure, Nitrogen Fertilizer and Sowing Methods on Growth and Yield of Sudangrass Forage (Sorghum Sudanense)
Author: Sally Mustafa Awad, Seliman
Abstract: A field experiment was conducted during the two seasons 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, to investigate the effect of chicken manure and nitrogen fertilization and sowing methods on growth and forage yield of Sudangrass. Fertilization treatments were; 2.0 tons /fed of fermented chicken manure, 2.0 tons/ fed of unfermented chicken manure, (40 kg/fed), and the control (without fertilizers ). Sowing was on flat and ridges. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Growth and forage yield were measured. The results showed that urea and chicken manure significantly increased plant height in the first crop, compared to the control, but had no significant effect on the other growth parameters. Untreated manure significantly increased forage dry yield in the first crop compared to other treatments. An increase in fresh forage yield with fertilization in the first crop was obtained, but it was not statistically significant. The sowing methods did not significantly affect growth and yield of Sudangrass in the first crop and ratoon.
