Title: Propagation of Ficus nitida L by Cuttings Technique

Abstract: This study was undertaken to shed some lights on the effects of using different types of both cuttings and rooting media, time of taking cutting material and shading on rooting ability of Ficus retusa L var. nitida (Indian laurel). In the first experiment, four types of cuttings were used, namely, heel cuttings, and softwood cuttings having three different lengths (10, 20 and 30 cm). The prepared cuttings were inserted into two different rooting media (sand and mixture of sand and river silt) and kept under shade and non-shade conditions. Cuttings were taken at monthly intervals. The parameters were recorded in terms of rooting percentages, root length, and number of both roots and leaves. Results of the first experiment revealed that cuttings taken in January and August gave higher values of rooting percentages compared to the other which showed, more or less, failure of rooting, regardless of types of cuttings and rooting media and shading. Higher values of rooting percentages were associated with heel cuttings and softwood cuttings of 10 and 20 cm long taken in January and kept under shade conditions compared to the other treatments. Heel cuttings kept under shaded conditions resulted in the higher values of root length and number of roots than the other types cuttings. No significant differences were noted in the values of number of leaves among the treatments. The differences in the values of number of roots, root length and number of leaves were not significant among the types of cuttings taken in January or August and allowed to root under uncovered conditions. Generally, greater values of the recorded parameters were associated with cuttings allowed to root under covered conditions compared to those allowed to root under uncovered conditions. Heel cuttings gave the greater values of the recorded parameters compared to the other types of cuttings, regardless of the month in which cuttings were taken. Significantly greater number of roots was associated with cuttings taken in January, allowed to root under covered conditions and inserted into sand medium compared to those inserted into the rooting mixture of sand + silt. No significant differences were noted in the values of number of roots, root length and number of leaves of cuttings taken in January or August and allowed to root under covered conditions between sand and the mixture of sand + silt rooting media; however, cuttings inserted into sand medium resulted in greater values of number of roots than those inserted into sand + silt rooting medium. In the second experiment, the effect of using different rooting media on rooting ability of heel cuttings was studied. The results showed that sand rooting medium resulted in greater values of root length, number of both roots and leaves and fresh and dry weights of leaves compared to silt rooting medium in which heel cuttings failed to form roots.
