Title: Use of 2.4 –D and Glyphosate Mixed With Diesel Oil for Mesquite Tree Control in Sudan

Abstract: A field study was conducted in the period between March-August 2005, the main objective of the study was to evaluate chemical control of mesquite Prosopis chilensis. Two herbicides were tested: 1- 2, 4 - D (2, 4- dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) at three different rates, 3, 6 and 12 ml per liter of inert diesel oil. 2- Glyphosate (N-phopsoromethyle glycine) at three different rates 6, 12, 25 ml per liter of inert diesel oil. Also was used inert diesel oil after debarking the base of the cut stem, likewise inert diesel oil was applied solely, and cut trees were left without any treatment as control. The study comprised 15 treatments including the control, seven treatments were applied above the soil surface and seven treatments which were applied after cut and debarked the crown area. The result showed that 2, 4-D in inert diesel oil gave the best control expressed as the number of sprouted buds regardless of the dose or debarking of the crown. In the case of glyphosate debarking of the trees was better at all rates compared to the same rates applied to the cut surface without debarking. The result also revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between chemical treatments and it could be concluded that 2, 4-D at its high rate with inert diesel oil only or plus debarking was better treatments. Also it is worth mentioning that the inert diesel oil gave a better effect in the case of debarking than in the cut only.
