Abstract: This study represents a theoretical and empirical contribution to the phenomenon of the rise and development of the Sudanese town. It seeks to demonstrate Tamboul as a local community is undergoing structural changes, which is transforming it from a truly rural settlement to an urban setting. The main objectives of this study are to know the rise of Tamboul, to document the historical changes that had taken place, and to determine internal and external factors that influenced these changes and to attempt their characterization. The study depended on anthropological methods and techniques in data collection such as participant observation and interviews during fieldwork, which was carried out between October 2001 upto April 2003. The study contained five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the research and its objectives and justification. Chapter two is a literature related to the study theme from a sociological and an anthropological perspectives discussing the theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Chapter three is a general description of the study area and its development from the dimension of the material bases like economic activities and its links to Butana hinterlands as the most principal factors governing change. Chapter four deals with the sociological inquiries with more concentration on non-material bases of the community of Tamboul. It discussed the area population, the history and social life of old and new districts like the Sarourab and Gezira projects four districts and the role of squatter settlements in changing the area. Also, it discussed the historical development of the different social services, political and administrative aspect, religious life, associational life and spatial relations to Tamboul with neighboring villages and other towns. Chapter five is devoted for discussion, conclusions and recommendations. From data gathered and theoretical orientation, the study concluded that the community of Tamboul is not a truly rural or urban community; it's undergoing structural changes in all systems gradually and slowly transforming it to semi-urban settlement as a result of many interplay factors like expansion and development of economic activities after 1960s. Theses principal factors include governmental institutions to attend and to provide social services to the town. As clearly shown in the study, there are physical changes.
