Title: Reproductive Health, New Dimensions and ChallengesCase Study of Southern Darfur State
Author: Ahmed,Awatif Daw Elbait Mohammed
Abstract: This study tried to shed light on Reproductive Health (RH) as concept, components and new universal dimension in population’s issues. The Cairo Programme of Action (1994) defined RH for the first time in an international policy document. The definition states that “reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system”. The importance of this study is that it tackled all of the RH components, not concentrating only on one of RH issues as in the previous studies. Complications of pregnancy and childbirth are major factors of disability and deaths among women of reproductive age in the less developed countries which are affected with some socio-economic factors (e.g. education, employment, ...). Data from safe motherhood survey of Southern Darfur State (1999) are taken as a sample of the states with high population density, high growth rate, and follows with diminishing in RH level. From the results obtained we can observe that, the most common RH problems among the women are urinary tract infections, dypareunia, vaginal discharge and menstrual disorders. The other problems (infertility, uterine prolapse, and urinary incontinence) are less reported. It is obvious that these problems are spread between women who are not gainfully employed and those who are in the age group less than 35 years. Educated women are more aware with mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS. This study depends on secondary data from national and international sources using statistical reports and surveys results
