Title: Taxonomic Revision of the family Boraginaceae in Sudan
Author: Hoyam Osman Ahmed, El Mahi
Abstract: The family Boraginaceae in Sudan was revised. Twelve different genera including thirty five species were taxonomical studied. This study was made to adjusted the family in Sudan, make a checklist and update the family. Also numerical and anatomical studies were included to compare the seven selected species. The studied materials include fresh material as well as herbarium specimens from the Botany Department in the Faculty of Science, University of Khartoum. Five species were updated to their new names from the recent literature. Distribution of the species was illustrated in a distribution map. Synonyms and vernacular names also their local uses were included as well. Although the studied genera and species showed resemblance in their diagnostic characters e.g. inflorescence, alternative leaves, stems and leaves covered with hispid hairs and the fruit four nutlets, they exhibit different types of leaves and many other morphological characters such as the parts of flower (stigma and style) which are illustrated in the constructed taxonomical keys. Numerical analysis for seven chosen species from the family (two from the genus Cordia and five species from the genus Heliotropium ) showed intergeneric and little interspecific variation, using measurable characters of the stem, leaves and number of flowers per inflorescence. Anatomical studies of the stems and leaves (e.g. hairs, cells and stomata) confirmed the variation of the numerical analysis. Cystolith were found in the upper epidermis of the genus Cordia only. Hairs were covered the upper and lower surface of the leaves of the genus Heliotropium, while in the genus Cordia they found around the midrib only. These results confirmed their classification under different genera and species of the Boraginaceae family.
