Title: Consumption Function Estimation for the Sudan(1960-2000)
Author: Hassan Mahgoub Elzibair, Ali
Abstract: This study is intended to make sure whether there was a stable relation with the consumption function in the Sudan during the period (1960-2000). Four hypotheses of absolute income, lifecycle, permanent income and relative income have been tested separately and then each hypothesis model has been designed. After that a general model for the whole consumption in the Sudan was designed. The main goal of the study is to build a model for the consumption function in the Sudan to determine the most independent variable has an effect on the consumption in the Sudan. The study used eleven exogenous variables and five behavioral equations. The unit root test has been applied and resulted in that all the variables are integrated of first order except the two variables of general price level and the world consumer price index which are integrated of second order. The study applied the cointegration to test the nature of consumption under the study period and this model revealed that there is along-term relation between the private consumption and the variables incorporated in the model and in this long- term relation we found out that the applied results are in harmony with economic theory and the disposable income is the main determinant of the private consumption. Also an error correction model revealed that there is a short-term relation between the private consumption and the variable incorporated in the model
