dc.description.abstract Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is released into the surrounding environment. Existence of this gas in indoors (houses and dwellings) mainly depends on its source in the building materials, the soil beneath the buildings and the ventilation of the rooms. In this study the technique of ground activated charcoal and gamma spectrometry system has been optimized and used for radon measurement. The measurements were performed for 111 rooms within Khartoum state. The rooms were preselected to represent new types of buildings (that use concreteredbricks and ceramics). The rooms were sorted out into groups according to their ventilation of each room. The results showed that radon concentration varies between 7 and 146 Bq/m3, with mean value of 70 ±23 , 39±2 , 22±2 Bq/m3 for closed rooms in the ground, first and second floor respectively while for open rooms it is in the range 57±28 , 30±4 and 12±3 Bq/m3 in the ground, first and second floor. The results showed that radon concentrations in these types of buildings are within the acceptable recommended levels. On the basis of the results obtained, the radiation dose received by a person living in these types of buildings due to the inhalation of radon was calculated. The average annual effective dose was found to be 1.2 mSv en_US
