Title: Calibration of a Radiation Survey Meter Using X-Rays

Abstract: The survey meter instrument SmartIon E0002883 was calibrated at the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) of Sudan Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) laboratory for X-rays of various qualities by using two methods. In the first method, SmartIon was calibrated by Spherical Ion Chamber 1000-cc-LS-01-S/N 912, which had been calibrated at the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna for X-rays of different qualities and م-rays from the sources Cs-137 and Co-60. The calibration factors for the instrument SmartIon were determined as the ratio of the dose equivalent rates obtained with the Spherical Ion Chamber and the dose equivalent rates of the instrument under calibration. In the second method, SmartIon was calibrated at a known radiation field at the point of test. Then the calibration factors for the SmartIon were determined as the ratio of the dose equivalent rates, which were known at the point of test, and the dose equivalent rates of the instrument under calibration. For the determination of the uncertainties other measurements were carried out for the Spherical Ion Chamber and SmartIon at م-rays with qualities (Cs-137, Co-60), as well as similar measurements for the measuring instrument GratzIon 553036 at X-rays with six qualities and م-rays with qualities (Cs-137, Co-60). The compound uncertainties for the Spherical Ion Chamber, SmartIon and GratzIon were then calculated and comparisons between them were made. Finally, measurements were carried out for response of SmartIon as a function of the angle from the direction of the incident beam
