Title: النفط والنزاع في أبيي دراسة في تحليل النزاع
Author: المثنى محمد عبد الحفيظ, محمد
Abstract: This research tackles the topic of “conflict analysis”: its basic concepts, and theoretical approaches with special emphasis on the impact of natural resources on conflict. Within this theoretical framework, the research studies the conflict in Abyei area in Sudan with regard to its socio-economic and political causes, its main actors and the role played by international actors in its escalation. The research also investigates the relation of Abyei conflict with the southern civil war in Sudan. The research applies the method of “conflict analysis” which starts by a descriptive approach to sketch the profile of conflict in Abyei. This profile shows the geography of the conflict and the socio-economic, political and cultural relations between the people of Abyei. The method, then, applies an analytical approach which investigates the causes of the conflict, main actors, and its intensity or level. The research is built on two research designs: the theory testing design to analyze conflict and its relation with natural resources, in one hand, and the case study design to consider the conflict in Abyei as a case for theoretical testing in the other. The research finds that natural resources are not the cause of armed conflicts. Nevertheless, it can play a major role in triggering and escalating them. Out of this, the research concludes that oil - due to its economic and strategic nature - plays a fundamental role in this escalation. The research reveals that oil added a new dimension to the already contested area of Abyei. The research finds that ethnic and cultural diversity in Abyei is the main factor behind the building of some kind of “selective perception” which disrupts communication between the two conflicting parties. It is necessary to differentiate - the study concludes - between the conflict IN Abyei (between Messirya Humur and Dinka ngok based on traditional patterns of livelihood) and the conflict OVER Abyei (between the National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People,s Liberation Movement (SPLM) based on power and oil
