Title: Computer Model for Designing And Managing Drip Irrigation Systems

Abstract: A computer simulation program was developed for designing and managing drip irrigation systems. Field trials were carried out, at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum – Shambat, to collect the data necessary for the model. Crop water requirement was estimated from Class A evaporation pan readings. The program was written in Visual Basic 6 programming language. The program is composed of introducing interface and forms. The program gives the net depth of water per irrigation and the irrigation frequency. The program then reads the total depth need to be applied per irrigation, the maximum number of operation units, the unit operation time and the system capacity. The program also reads the results with irrigation frequencies of one day and two days. From the input data for May, the model gave net depth of water to be applied per irrigation as 57.5 mm for irrigation frequency of 7 days. The total depth applied per irrigation was 67.3 mm; the maximum number of operation units should not exceed 17 units with 10 hours as operation time for each unit. The system capacity was 2.5m3/min. The total depth applied per irrigation was 9.6 and 19.2 mm, maximum number of operation units should not exceed 3 and 5 units, with 1.5 and 3 hours as operation time for each unit, and the system capacity was 0.3 and 0.1 m3/min. for irrigation frequency of one day and two days, respectively. The program can be considered as suitable design and management tool. The model can predict satisfactorily system efficiency when the correct input data are fed.
