Abstract: This study was conducted primarily to reveal the effects of some environmental and genetic factors on the reproductive and milk production traits of Butana and Kenana dairy cattle of the Sudan and in part to estimate their genetic parameters in an attempt to explore their real potential. The study included 1776 Butana records at Atbara Research Station covering the years 1949 - 1989 and 2069 Kenana records at Um benein Livestock Experimental Station covering the period from 1957 to 1989. The records were analyzed using the least squares procedure employing SAS Computer program version 1977. The least squares estimates of age at first calving, average calving interval, average lactation length, milk yield, average daily milk yield, first lactation milk yield and average calf birth weight were 47.01, 12.91 months, 3527.35±1109 (1599.73 kg), 13.24±4.5 lb. (6.11 kg), 2933.62±1004 lb (1330.44 kg) and 25.79±4.33 kg for the Butana herd, respectively and were 45.67±11.49 months, 14.87±4.2 months, 3139.35±551.71 lb (1423.58 kg.), 12.46±3.93 lb (5.65 kg), 2730.06±1017 lb. (1238.12 kg) and 23.24±3.49 kg for Kenana herd. The year x season of calving had a highly significant effect (P< 0.01) on all traits except age at first calving of Kenana herd. Lactation number and sire of the cow showed highly significant effects on all reproductive and milk production traits of Butana cattle except the first lactation milk yield (P<0.05). Age of the cow only influenced the average lactation milk yield, average calf birth weight (P<0.01) and the average calving interval (P<0.05). Sex of the calf affected only the average calf birth weight. Heritabilities were estimated by the Maximum Likelihood Method, using VARGIN programme of Kennedy (1977) and the estimates were 0.019±0.026, 0.023±0.029, 0.29±0.13, 0.49±0.11, 0.21±0.04 and 0.36±0.16 for age at first calving, average calving interval, average total lactation milk yield, first lactation milk yield, first lactation length and the average calf birth weight of Butana cattle, respectively. As for Kenana cattle the estimates were: 0.039±0.023, 0.018±0.021, 0.34±0.009, 0.19±0.026, 0.20±0.027 and 0.31±12 for the same traits, respectively. Genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations were estimated using paternal half sibs correlation (Becker, 1975). The genetic correlations were: 0.179 for age at first calving and the average calving interval, 0.013 for age at first calving and first lactation length, 0.54 for age at first calving and the first lactation milk yield, 0.0003 between the average calving interval and the first lactation milk yield, then 0.088 between average calving interval and the first lactation length and finally 0.61 for the first lactation yield and first lactation length of Butana cattle. As for Kenana cattle the genetic correlations were: 0.11, 0.005, 0.054, 0.089, -0.042 and 0.5115 for the same traits, respectively. The phenotypic correlation between the same traits in Butana cattle were 0.270, -0.37, 0.59, 0.34, -0.209 and 0.91, respectively. And were found to be 0.178, 0.27, -0.19, -0.19, -0.226 and 0.701 for the Kenana cattle. Likewise the environmental correlations were 0.185, 0.024, 0.58, 0.04, 0.102 and 0.64 in case of Butana and 0.167, 0.004, 0.065, 0.04, 0.045 and 0.516 in case of Kenana. This study highlighted the importance of conserving the indigenous dairy cattle breeds and opened the way for more intensive research work in this field before the blind adoption of any breeding policies particularly the ones which encourage the partial or complete replacement of these indigenous breeds without considering their adaptive characteristics.
