Title: Replacement of Cereal Energy by Molasses at Increasing Protein/Energy Ratio for Fattening Rabbitlets.

Abstract: Twenty four male entire Baladi rabbits were used in this experiment. They were purchased almost similar in age and live weight. They were allotted randomly to three treatment groups A, B and C of eight heads each with group A being control. Experimental rations were formulated as iso-caloric containing approximately 8 MJ/kg metabolic energy, Crude protein was 12, 15 and 18 % for rations A, B and C, respectively. The ingredients used were groundnut cakes, urea, groundnut hulls and sodium chloride. The energy component of molasses (M) and dura (D) in rations A, B and C alternate 0M-60%D, 30M -30%D and 60M - 0%D in ration A, B, and C, respectively. Each experimental group was fed its respective ration for six days adaptation period. Initial weight was recorded on the first day of the experiment which continued for ten weeks. Data on feed intake was collected daily and live weight weekly. On conclusion of the experiment, all animals were slaughtered for carcass analysis and subjective meat quality values. The effect of treatment on total gain was significant (P<0.05). Group b was intermediate (396.00 ± 107.89) between group A (highest) and group B (lowest). Food conversion of rabbits in group A (3.38) and group B (3.4) was better than that of group C (3.85). Treatment effect on body components was significant (P<0.05) in slaughter weights, empty body weight, hot carcass weight, intestines, pluck and genital organs with values decreasing with descending order of groups A, B and C. Group C recorded the highest dressing percentage (61.32 ± 3.69), B was intermediate (60.55±2.88) and A least (58.25 ±0.950). The effect of treatment on internal fat was significant (P<0.05) and was highest in group A followed by B and C. Percent cuts in all treatments were similar. Subjective meat quality values revealed insignificant (P > 0.05) treatment effect in all parameters measured. The feed conversion ratio based on dura gave superior growth rate. Upon 50% replacement of Dura by molasses, the decrease in growth rate was 8%. When energy was 100% derived from molasses the decrease in growth rate reached 91%. The Baladi type rabbits can parallel exotic types provided that the ration is balanced. The molasses feeding in the experimental rations brought about significant increase in internal fat deposition similar to what happens with ruminant species. The rabbit meat was found quite acceptable by panelists in all subjective parameters. Further investigations on rabbit nutrition and production were suggested
