Title: Chemical Composition and Nutritive Value of Brachiaria Obtusiflora Seeds for Broiler Chickens.
Author: Ali Mirghani Mohamed, Magidab
Abstract: A feeding trial using broiler chicks fed Brachiaria obtusiflora (Hochst) stapf seeds (Um chirr) in practical type rations was conducted. Um chirr seeds were substituted for part of Sorghum at 50,100,150 and 250 g./kg. Chemical analysis of Um chirr seeds provided proximate analysis values, amino acids and minerals composition. Um chirr seeds were superior to Sorghum in phosphorus and sulphur amino acids content From the chemical analysis the calculated metabolizable energy content of Um chirr seeds was expected to be 12.9 MJ/kg but a lower value of 11.6 Mj/kg was obtained for true metabolizable energy using chick growth assay. Growth performance of birds grown to 38 days of age was improved (p<0.05) by feeding 50 and l50 g./kg Um chirr seeds whereas the growth response to 100g/kg was similar to the control group of chicks. Growth of chicks was impaired by feeding 250g/kg Um chirr seeds. The dietary treatment had no significant effect of Um chirr seeds on mortality. From the analysis of Um chirr seeds and the results of the feeding trial it appears that Um chirr seeds can he used at 150 g/kg. Although the TME value of Um chirr seeds was slightly lower than that reported for Sorghum, it could still play an important competitive role as a source of energy in poultry rations.
