dc.description.abstract Four rations were formulated using different protein (nitrogen) sources. These were cotton seed cake (CSC), sesame seed cake (SSC), groundnut cake (GNC) and sunflower seed cake (SFSC). The rations were isocaloric and isonitrogenous with basal diets of molasses, wheat bran and groundnut hulls. Thirty two yearling uncasterated males of Sudan desert sheep 28 kg. mean body weight were used to study the effects of the different nitrogen sources on growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, digestibility of nutrients, ruminal pH and ammonia, total volatile fatty acid concentrations and serum urea-nitrogen concentration. Daily gains of SFSC and SSC-fed sheep averaged 96.7 g and 87.5 g, respectively, compared with 76.3 g and 72.9 g for CSC and GNC-fed sheep (P>0.05). The daily feed intake was higher for CSC-fed sheep while SSC and GNC-fed sheep showed the lowest dry matter consumption. SFSC-fed sheep showed the best feed utilization which was reflected in feed conversion ratio (feed/gain). The source of nitrogen in the diet had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the apparent digestibility of the diet components except for the ether extract, nitrogen free extract and total digestible nutrients where SFSC-fed sheep showed the highest values (P<0.05). Nitrogen retention values were significantly (P<0.05) higher for CSC and SFSC fed sheep. The treatment had no significant effect on ruminal pH, volatile fatty acids, ammonia or blood urea-N when samples were taken 3hr.after feeding. en_US
