Title: : Some Aspects of Anaesthesia in Dogs Using Thiopentone Sodium with or without Selected Alpha2 Adrenoceptor Agonists and its Reversal with Atipamizole
Author: Ayman Ahmed El Zein El Nahas, El Nahas
Abstract: This study was conducted using 40 healthy German shepherd dogs. Thiopentone sodium (TH) 10 mg/kg was used as an anaesthetic agent in all the designed protocols with or without selected alpha2 adrenoceptor agonist namely xylazine (XY) 2 mg/kg and medetomidine (MED) 20 μg/kg as premedicants. The reversal effect of atipamizole (ATZ) 100 μg /kg (alpha2 antagonist) with these regimes was also studied. Respiratory rate, heart rate, rectal temperature and blood glucose levels were monitored using the standard methods. The different phases of anaesthesia (anaesthesia phase, light anaesthesia, lateral recumbence phase, sternal recumbence phase, standing phase, walking phase and total recovery time) were subjectively monitored. Regaining time of selected reflexes (palpeberal, pedal, swallowing, cough, jaw relaxation and tongue reflexes) were also subjectively studied. Apnea was found to occur following induction of anaesthesia with different anesthetic protocols tested. AIpha2 premedicants significantly prolonged duration of apnea compared with non-premedicated protocol. The respiratory rate was significantly depressed following induction of anaesthesia in all protocols. Induction of anaesthesia with TH alone resulted in a significant tachycardia, which persisted during the whole course of anaesthesia. Usage of XZ and MED premedications with TH resulted in a significant bradycardia
