Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the participatory agroforestry system adopted in Elrawashda natural forest reserve since 1994 onward in the rehabilitation programmes, and to investigate the role of the local people participation in the management of the natural forest reserves. In this study, an inventory has been carried out to cover the plantations established in the period 1994-1998. An approach of systematic sampling was used, 100 sample plots (20 plots for every age class) were established, diameters and top heights were measured and number of trees was taken. The result reveal that participatory agroforestry have succeeded to establish well-stocked stands and rehabilitated a considerable area of the forest during the period from 1994-1998. Comparing the current participatory approach with the previous participation approaches practiced in Elrawashda forest reserve, the success of the participatory agroforestry system 1994-1998 becomes obvious. Also, results show that seeds mixture used in the planting process did not lead to the desirable species composition in the growing stands. The study reveals the positive and effective role of the local people participation in the management of natural forest reserves. The role is very essential in the planting process and providing the convenient protection that required for the seedlings - particularly in the earliest stages of stands development. Local people exhibit their readiness to contribute in the forestry activities - particularly in those of integrated form with agriculture. The study recommended that especial emphases on participatory approach base on collaboration between FNC and local people.
