Title: Transmission Studies of Some Animal Trypanosomes

Abstract: The ecology and physiology of hosts and vectors constitute the main biological barriers through which the African trypanosomes pass successfully after being subjected to adjustments to various substrates. In this study, an attempt was made to elucidate some factors which govern the transmission of some animal trypanosomes by Glossina species and the interpretation of field study findings on the light of laboratory studies. A population of G. pallidipes was studied in its natural habitat (Meru National Park, Kenya). Seasonal fluctuations affected by ecological factors together with infection rates with different trypanosomes were studied. G. morsitans susceptibility to Trypanosoma brucei, T. congolense and T. evansi was studied in the laboratory. This part was mainly intended to disclose the factors that affect the infection of Glossina species in the field. The scarcity of T. brucei infections of tsetse in the field was confirmed and discussed on the light of field and laboratory observations. The age of the fly as a factor affecting the development of the serigraphic membrane, its pre-infection feeding history, the intensity and form of host parasitism were the main factors limiting the fly susceptibility to infection with T. brucei. T. congolense infectivity was found to be limited mainly by the intensity of host parasitaemia and to a lesser extent by the fly age. T. evansi was not able to survive and establish to maturity in the tsetse flies, but immature forms in the chemical require further investigation of the possible lethal effect of the haemolymph to T. evansi. Female flies were found to be more susceptible to infection in the laboratory. This was confirmed in the field by finding more infected females than males. The role of goats in the transmission of T. evansi was discussed although they varied slightly in their response to T. evansi from different localities, but they showed a marked degree of resistance and they recovered immediately after chemotherapy. This characteristic of resistance could be utilized positively to select a trypanotolerant breed that may solve the problem of goats as potential reservouirs of trypanosomes
