Title: Analysis and Control of Nonlinear Systems with Special Emphasis on pH Processes

Abstract: A review of the main stability analysis techniques for nonlinear systems with special emphasis on pH processes is presented. The system under consideration is a continuous flow neutralization scheme of a strong acid and a strong base. The main problems that face the control of this class of nonlinear systems are discussed and formulated. A combined adaptive feedforward and feedback control strategy employing a microcomputer-based nonlinear controller is developed to achieve an online neutralization of a continuous flow around the neutrality point of pH 7. An iterative adaptive algorithm which makes use of the fedback performance indices to tune both the feed forward and feedback controller parameters. Assessment of performance with respect to stability and convergences criteria are presented analytically together with the analysis of the adaptive adjustment of the controller gain in terms of system stability. Boundary conditions for system stability are also derived. Simulation results prove the validity of the proposed control strategy and highlight the concepts involved. Evaluation of the performance suggested control strategy relative to the Smith predictor technique are included. The in terracing of the various control elements to microcomputer which is used to implement the adaptive nonlinear digital controller is explained in details. A set of practical experiments were performed and their results are included to confirm the predictions of the simulation and emphasis the feasibility of the suggested system layout as well as the proposed adaptive control strategy as being a new promising technique in the field of pH control.
