Abstract: Chapter (I) examines the role of labour as a factor of production in low income countries with emphasis on factors which affect performance, casual labour, supply and demand of labour on agricultural development. Chapter (II) traces the development of commercial production in the Sudan both for export and import substitution and production for home consumption, its effect on the demand for labour and the effect of new cropping on the supply and demand for labour. The structure of the labour force in the Gezira Scheme and conditions of employment are discussed in chapter (III). Chapter (IV) is a field examination of conditions of employment in the Geziral Scheme. Chapter (V) examines the present and future demand / supply position for labour in the Gezira and suggests possible measures for mitigating excessive demand.
