Author: Rahma, Moawia Yahia Babiker
Abstract: Thirty two samples were collected from 12 locations inside the dumping site and outside, (50 and 100 meters from the dumping site in four directions. Water samples were collected from four drinking wells and two pools resulting from the run-off water around the area in July 1995. Gross residues of endusulfan (α and β), XHCH, heptachlor, DDD, nitrofen and.2,4-D dichlorophenol were determined in mg/kg soil samples and mg/l for water sanlples. Residues of endosulfan (α and β), DDD, nitrofen and 2,4-D (in form of 2,4 dichlorophenol) were appeared as the dominant contaminants over the origin of the dumping site, 50 and 100 meter from the dumping area for the four directions. Western and northern directions were found to have the higher level of concentration of the seven pesticides. Water samples had lower level of concentrations for HCH and heptachlor. The study concluded that the poor storage, exposure of obsolete and leaky containers of pesticides under various climatic conditions acting as a major factor of air, water and soil pollution.
