Abstract: In this research the problem of energy shortage during summer period of the Sudanese Power System is handled as an operational planning problem. The planning problem is treated as Hydro-thermal coordination problem, it is decomposed into two main sub-problems; First is long range scheduling problem with planning period of 30 weeks, Second is the short range hydroelectric generation scheduling problem with planning period of one week. GAMS modeling Language is used to develop computer model structure for both Long Range Scheduling Model (LRSM) and Short Range Scheduling Model (SRSM) which simulate Blue Nile and power system operations during summer period. Both models are represented as nonlinear programming problem that has nonlinear constraints with different system details. An inflow recession forecast software model were developed to generate weekly expected inflow values to be used as input to LRSM while load curve and thermal units availability model is developed to prepare load and availability data required by SRSM. The model were tested using 1994 summer period actual data showing that a considerable reduction of load shedding nearby the end of summer period could be obtained.
