Title: The Use of Natural Agricultural Products and Biological Agents for the Control of Schistosomiasis
Author: Daffalla, Asim Abdelrahim
Abstract: The first chapter is a brief historical review of the literature on the methods of control of schistosomiasis. The thesis is mainly concerned with the control of the snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis using naturally occurring materials. In the second chapter different parts of naturally occurring plants were tested for molluscicidal activity. The results indicate that some plants (Balanites aegyptiaca and Scilla lilacina) possessed some moiluscicidal potency. While the seeds of Jatropha Schweinfurthii and Jatropha sp. (both locally known as Habat-El-Mollok) are highly molluscicidal. The molluscicidal activity and properties of this plant were found to be comparable with those of the currently used moluscicides. The results of the field evaluations were excellent. Chapter three deals with the possible use of the lung fish Protopterus aethiopicus for the control of the snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis. The results show that P. aethiopicus preferred to eat snails to other available food varieties. The small scale field trials concluded in a pond infested with snails indicate that P. aethiopicus could control snail in such conditions
