Title: An Analysis of the Bari Noun Phrase
Author: Mustafa, Mawahib Altayeb
Abstract: This research is a descriptive study of one of the Nilo-Saharan languages spoken in Republic of South Sudan; namely, the Bari language. It tries to describe and analyze the structure of noun phrase in Bari focusing on the main grammatical categories of the noun phase in this language. It aims at identifying the different word classes and the form of the noun phase in Bari and to making a preliminary description of the noun phase in the language and the way it functions. The linguistic data were collected during formal sessions with four Bari native speakers living in Hai al-Baraka in Khartoum North in the period from December 2012 to January 2013; in addition to meetings with other members of the Bari community in the same area. Moreover, the researcher remained always in touch with the above four informants for further linguistic clarifications or data elucidations. The study adopted different techniques during collecting the data, including elicitation of sentences and word list compilation. The study used the descriptive method in analyzing the data. The study came out with a number of findings, most important being that all modifiers in Bari noun phrase follow the head noun, except the demonstrative, which occurs always in initial word position. Bari, being a gender language, all modifiers in its noun phrases are marked for gender. However, in possessive NP the gender marker appears exclusively on the ‘possessed’. In adj. NP, the adj. follows the head noun, but if there are two adjectives, the first one precedes the head noun and other one follows it. Another finding is that adj. is marked for gender and not number (i.e. the same form of adj. modifies the noun in both singular and plural). The researcher recommended future research on Bari, particularly on some phonological issues related to the structure of noun phrase and verbal syntax.
