Title: Analysis and Simulation of Capacitor Switching Problem in Portsudan Substation

Abstract: Capacitor switching is one of the major sources of overvoltages in power system. Accordingly, switching should be done with special care. This study is done to analyze the unjustified tripping of the 100MVA power transformer after switching 33Kv 5MVAR capacitor bank in Portsudan substation. The study presents the effect of surge arrester in reducing the switching overvoltages. The simulation of many switching cases were done using Alternative Transient Program ATP and compared with the current and voltage waveforms that recorded by the fault recorder and protection relays. The suggested solution is successfully applied in Portsudan substation by increasing the distance between the transformer pushing and the 33 Kv cable’s grounding shield. The capacitor was operated successfully.
