Title: Effect of Type 1 Diabetes On School Performance of Diabetic Children in Jaafar Ibn Awf Pediatrics Hospital

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus causes neurological complications which in turn can affect the school performance of the diabetic children. A lot of studies were done internationally but in the Sudan, this has not been well characterized. OBJECTIVES: to compare the school performance of the diabetic and the non-diabetic children. Moreover, to determine the relation between the age of diagnosis and the school performance. METHODS: Self administrated questioners were distributed and interviews were done in Jaafar ibn Awf pediatrics hospital in Khartoum, Sudan. Other questioners for the non-diabetic children (control group) were distributed randomly in the community. RESULTS: 73 cases and 105 control were included in the study. It has been found that the non-diabetic have a better scores in Distinction and V.good degrees while the diabetic have a better scores in the pass and good degrees. Regarding the number of days absents, diabetic have a higher frequencies regarding the absence. 83.3% of the diabetic have 1-5 days of absent monthly while 99% of the non-diabetic have the same days of absent. 11% of the diabetic have 6-10 days of absent monthly while only 1% of the non-diabetic have the same days of absent. 2.7% of diabetic have 11-15 days of absent monthly while there were not non-diabetic children with the same days of absent. Concerning the relation between the age of diagnosis and the school performance, it has been found the children who are diagnosed earlier have a better school performance compared to those who are diagnosed later. CONCLUSION: Diabetes affects the school performance of the children by affecting their academic scores and increasing the number of days absents because of the disease monthly. Also the early diagnosis of diabetes affect the school reduce the effect of diabetes on school children
