Title: Treatment of Wastewater in Alsahafa Slaughterhouse in Khartoum State

Abstract: Abstract The objective of this study is to assess the slaughterhouse wastewater properties and to propose a method of treatment. The study was carried out in Alsahafa slaughterhouse in Khartoum area. The pollution degree was evaluated by measuring wastewater properties such as Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Dissolved solids (TDS), Suspended Solids (SS) and (pH) .The methodology adopted in the study comprised of site visits, questionnaire, and laboratory tests. On other hand a simulation of the treatment process was made using bench scale treatment unit. The analyses were performed to measure the properties of slaughterhouse wastewater input and output and its results were compared with local order wastewater standards of Industrial Waste Local Order 1971-Khartoum North, and Promotion Act 2008-Khartoum State. The obtained results for the slaughterhouse ponds were 6.92 pH, 1990.9 (mg/l) BOD5, 2997.2 (mg/l) COD, and 390.7 (mg/l) SS. While the final results for the bench scale ponds (proposed) were 7.01pH, 1350.4(mg/l) BOD5, 2169.7(mg/l) COD, and 320.1(mg/l) SS. The results showed that the treated wastewater was polluted and with values above the allowable limits. Thus it could not be used for irrigation and consequently further treatment unit is needed to meet the allowable limits.
