Title: Effect of tractor Forward speeds on Disc Plough Performance in Shambat Area (Sudan)

Abstract: This study was carried out at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, during 2010/2011 to evaluate the effect of changing tractor forward speed on the performance of disc plough (the most commonly used primary tillage implement). Three forward speeds were studied (5,7 and 9 km/h). Performance parameters evaluated were ploughing depth, cutting width and wheel slippage. The studies also include the effect of the forward speed on two soil physical properties (bulk density and porosity). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. High values of ploughing depth and cutting width (21.3and 57.8 cm) were recorded for the forward speed of 7 km/h followed by 19.3 and 55.4 cm for the forward speed of 5 km/h, while the lowest value of 19.2 and 52.7cm were recorded for the forward speed of 9 km/h . Result also showed that the forward speed of 7 km/h recorded the lowest slippage percentage (6.4%) followed by the forward speed of 5 and 9 km/h, which recorded 7.3% and 10.3% respectively. Significant differences (P< 0.05) were observed between ploughing depth and cutting width for the three studied forward speed.by increasing both ploughing depth and cutting width and reducing slippage percentage the forward speed of 7 km/h proved to be the most convenient for the primary ploughing operation. Differences in bulk density and porosity were not significant (P>0.05) for the three forward speeds.
