Abstract: In the last years, pollution from motorveihcles in big cities represented the majority of the pollution that affected air quality, due to unplanned increase in all types of motorveihcles. The poor quality of air has negative effect on the human health and the environment. The main purpose of this study is to estimate the pollution caused by motor veihcle in Khartoum City to carbon monoxide, sulpher dioxide and particulate matters. Nine samples of air were taken from different location#1; near the main streets and raods in Khartoum (2 meters from road sides) to estimate the emissions of carbon monoxide, sulpher dioxide and particulate matters. Regarding gas analysis, multi-gas detector was used, while for particulate matters, air sampling pump was used. The results revealed that, the level of carbon monoxide concentration varied among the different locations of samples, and also differs during the day and week in the same location. Near Stack intersection, the highest concentration of carbon monoxide was 16 ppm, the lowest level recorded was 1 ppm. The results of sulpher dioxide concentration in Khartoum do not threaten the environment. This is due to its lack in the fuel (0 -0.2 ppm). The particulate matters were found to be about 1.67 – 8.33 mg/m3. The study concluded that, air pollution due to motor veihcles not threaten the environment, inspite of the high level of carbon monoxide in some of the studied locations (according to WHO criteria) and the presence of dust in Khartoum city. the study recommended that measure to reduce the effect of pollution upon traffic men suchas, traffic towers should be built so as to protect them. social services building should be far away from areas supsected to have high pollution. It is recommended that further researches to explain the relatonship between the dust and some diseases such as asthma and chronic allergies should be done, there should also be continuous measuring and monitoring of air quality
