Title: Distribution and Properties of Top Expansive Clay Soils in Khartoum

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to create an expandable geotechnical database for the upper clay crust covering Khartoum city, analyze the data to formulate contour maps for the clay depth and its basic properties of interest for foundation design. The sectors benefiting directly from this study are the investors, contractors, and consulting engineers. Data was collected from over 100 investigated sites and 300 boreholes varying in depth from 5.0 m to 50.0 m. The sites were located by GPS and Google earth programs. GIS, Conventional statistics and descriptive analysis were used for data analysis. Contour maps were presented for the upper clay depth, plasticity index, water table depth and depth to bedrock. Basic statistics describing the variability of the geotechnical properties of interest was given. The maximum, minimum, median, standard deviation and coefficient of variation are presented. Trends and relationships between basic geotechnical properties such as LL, PI, LI, ^7;d, C , qu and other developed properties have been established. These trends and relationships would be useful for quick and in-expensive check of test results on soils from the study area.
