Title: Invistigation of Tube Leakage of Heat Recovery Steam Generator in Garri Power Plant

Abstract: The aim of this research was to investigate the boiler tubes leakage problem and to suggest solution for the problem. To conduct this study, all data concerning the boilers performance were collected by reviewing the periodical daily and monthly maintenance and operational reports in addition to reviewing the test results of the boiler water samples as well as studying all previous reports regarding water leakage in the boilers. The study showed that the failure of boiler tubes was in the form of bending, bulging, cracking, wearing or rupture. The failure could be caused by one or more modes such as overheating, stress corrosion cracking, improper concentration and/or specifications of boiler water chemicals, welding defects or material defects. However there were three major causes that led to tube failures. These included: failures caused by improper operation due to the deviation from the recommended start-up and shut sequences and procedures, failures caused by boiler water quality due to absence of control of specifications and failure caused by unsafe preservation of boiler during operation or idle period. To avoid tubes failure and emergency shutdown the research recommended that: Firstly, the operation sequences and implementation procedures for startup or shutdown of HRSGs should be followed strictly. Secondly, the boiler should be protected from thermal damage and from the irreversible damage caused by corrosion by an effective boiler water treatment. Thirdly, Good preservation of the boiler during operation or shutdown should be carried out. Storage procedures are designed to allow boilers to be kept off line for any period of time without damage. Finally, Inspection (schedule preventive maintenance) ought to be followed.
