Abstract: In the work described in this thesis it is found that 3-methyl–4–nitrobenzyl chloride and 3,5–dimethyl–4–nitrobenzyl chloride react with alkali in aqueous dioxan to give mixtures of mainly alcohol and small amounts of ether. The kinetic form of these reactions and the effect of added suitably substituted benzyl alcohols and benzaldehydes were studied, and these two chlorides were compared, in this respect, with each other and with benzyl chloride and 4–nitrobenzyl chloride. The results show that the introduction of one methyl group ortho to the nitro group in 4–nitrobenzyl chloride led to considerable reduction of side-chain reactivity due to the resultant steric inhibition of resonance between the nitro group and the benzene ring. The introduction of a second methyl group ortho to the nitro group led to complete suppression of the resonance effect: the reactivities of 3,5–dimethyl–4–nitrobenzyl chloride and benzyl chloride here were found to be in nature and virtually equal
