Title: Evaluation of Quality of Concretes for Some Construction Projects in Sudan
Author: Sobeir, Wafa Siddig Elamin
Abstract: Evaluation of concrete quality is considered to be among the most important topics deserving meticulous study especially during the past few years, in the light of the current tremendous development in the construction industry in Sudan. The study aimed towards evaluation of concrete quality actually constructed in Sudan during the past five years (2008 – 2012). Deviation of the results from the acceptable strength limits was also recognized and identified. The evaluation is based on hundreds of real data results of cubes crushing experiments accumulated in the Building and Road Research Institute (BRRI) laboratories at the age of 7 and 28 days. Compressive strength tests results were collected classified and studied.Collected results for the five years represent crushing test for grade 25MPa. Scrutiny and investigation of the data was performed using the computer program (Excel) and the statistical program (SPSS). The evaluation study of concrete quality is referred to three basic references viz. the American Code (ACI), the British Code (BS) and the quality control charts (Shewhart Charts). These are the main forms usually adopted for quality assessment all over the world. The available data results derived from the above mentioned program (Excel & SPSS) was carefully assessed upon the pre-mentioned codes and finally resulted in a strongly founded satisfaction that "the quality control levels in Sudan lie mainly between poor and very poor". The highest quality levels recognized during the study period were realized in the base year (2008) and since then the quality records displayed inconsistent decrease during the following four years, as clearly illustrates in the current study. Some recommendations had been stated to improve quality levels of concrete in construction industry in Sudan; also, further study topics had been suggested.
